How Can I Protect a Finished DIY Kit?

After finishing a Robotime, ROKR, Rolife, or Rowood DIY kit, good protection helps the model stay clean, stable, and display-ready for longer. Dust, direct sunlight, moisture, pets, children, and accidental bumps can all affect delicate wooden parts, printed details, lights, and small decorations.

Protection Guide for Finished DIY Kits

01

Use a Dust-Proof Display Case When Possible

A dust-proof display case is one of the easiest ways to protect a finished model. It helps reduce dust buildup, limits accidental contact, and makes long-term display easier for delicate miniature houses, book nooks, music boxes, and mechanical models.

Tip: Robotime recommends dust-proof storage or display cases for finished models, especially when the model has many tiny details or hard-to-clean areas. See the community post “The Best Way to Store Your DIY & Crafting Models”.
02

Keep Models Away from Direct Sunlight

Direct sunlight can fade printed surfaces, paint, paper details, and decorative colors over time. If possible, display finished kits away from strong window light or use a cabinet, curtain, or UV-resistant cover to reduce long-term fading.

Tip: Community member @JDisaduck shared “Sun Faded Robotown School”, showing how a finished kit became noticeably sun-bleached after years of display in direct sunlight.
03

Protect Models from Pets and Children

Pets and young children can accidentally knock over, chew, pull, or damage delicate model parts. If your home has cats, dogs, or small children, choose a display case, cabinet with doors, high shelf, or enclosed storage box instead of an open low surface.

Tip: In “Cats and Builds Don’t Go Together”, community member @Micasjas and other builders recommend dust covers, display cases, glass-door cabinets, or placing finished builds somewhere pets cannot easily reach.
04

Secure Models Against Accidental Falls

If a model is displayed on a shelf, cabinet, or table, make sure the surface is stable and level. For areas with more movement, vibration, or foot traffic, a small amount of removable double-sided adhesive, museum putty, or Velcro-style support can help reduce the risk of falling.

Tip: Community member @old_arcture shared several practical protection ideas in “How to Protect Your Miniatures from Environmental Effects”, including transparent-door cabinets, individual cases, adhesive support, and high shelves.

Control Dust, Moisture, and Air Quality

Humidity, moisture, smoke, kitchen grease, and airborne dust can affect paper, wood, glue, paint, and electrical parts. Keep finished models away from bathrooms, damp basements, kitchen steam, open windows during bad weather, and areas where dust collects quickly.

Tip: A semi-sealed cabinet or display case can reduce exposure to dust and air pollution while still keeping the model visible.
